MacBookPro 17"So I recorded a show last night (working to get it online as we speak) and of course I mention Apple may be planning on releasing the 17″ MacBook Pro. So, I get on-line this morning and BOOM there it is. How’s that for bad timing? Oh well. Look for a full rundown of the new larger MacBook Pro in the next edition, but for now here are some highlights. Note the re-appearence of the Firewire 800 port (YEAH!), too bad it will cost you at least $2,800 (USD) for the feature.

  • 17in. Display
  • 6.8 lbs.
  • 8x Dual Layer SuperDrive
  • One Firewire 400 Port
  • One Firewire 800 Port
  • 3 USB 2.0 Ports

For me, buying a Mac computer is much like washing a car — wash the car and it rains an hour later. Buy a 15″ MacBook Pro and a 17″ one comes out a few days later. Doh!

I’ll bet the 17’s are ridiculously fast and fun to use!!

For me, buying a Mac Book Pro 17″ would be like buying a reliable very used car. 3 Grand… that’s extra pricey.

Duel layer burner. However, it is $4500 in Australia.

    Burnt,
Give the full story on the AU price. That $4,500 ($A) includes your countries 10% GST. ;) So it breaks down like this:

The $2,800 US price at todays exchange rate becomes $3,761 in AU dollars. Add the 10% tax and you get ~$4,137.00 ($A). So you are left with $363.00 ($AU) which converted back to USD become an actaul markup of only $270 (USD). I think it is reasonable to assume Apple may need the $270.00 (USD) as additional overhead costs for doing business in your country.

I’ve been waiting for this since WWDC 2005. I ordered my 17″ Macbook Pro this afternoon. :D

Apple’s RAM prices are ridiculous though. They wanted an additional £210 for an extra 1GB stick. I’m going to order a 1GB stick from Crucial for £98.

Hey, you guys…would just like to mention bying the new 17″ Macbook Pro in Norway, will sett you back a cooool $3,655 compared to the mear $2,800 it will cost you in the USA. Please refraine your self from complaining about the price. I would just love to be able to pay either the Auzzie or US price…but, I must also mention that after todays little annoucement, I’m still pondering if a can refrain myself from buying the 17″. It’s a great tool for an amature photograher like myself. a portable “Big Screen”, just got to love it.

PS:What’s up with the price difference between the MBP 15″ and 17″, when you configure them to match up in the Apple Store…allmost $200 more for the 15″???

Why do you need a 17″ MacBook Pro anyways? why not buy an iMac with a 500 GB hard drive for so much less money. A 17″ MacBook Pro defeats its purpose of portability because of its weight and ridiculous size. The seventeen is big enough and I cant wait till the 12″ ultra portable comes out.

A seventeen inch MacBook Pro is like having a Hummer for city driving… just too big and too expensive

    @Reid Scott

The 17″ screen might be bigger, but the physical dimensions are not that much larger.

    Width: 392mm vs 357mm
    Depth: 265mm vs 243mm

I already have a Powermac, but I need portability, and a high resolution screen. Since the 17″ MBP has the same resolution as the 20″ Cinema Display I currently use, for me, it is ideal.

Thanks for the breakdown Adam. I do wish I had USD to spend downunder.
