OWC Slashes Prices on Maxtor Drives (updated)

If you were planing to buy a new hard drive for you Macintosh, now is a great time. OWC (Other World Computing) has just announced a huge price cut on their 500GB SATA Drive. In case you did not know, 500 GB is a lot. By a lot I mean about 500 hours of SDTV or about 89 hours of HDTV. This drive is made by Maxtor and has SATA I/II 3.0G, a 16 MB buffer, a 5 year warranty, and is 7200 RPM. They are now selling for a mere $133.99 which makes it about $.25 per gigabyte. It can be found at http://macsales.com. (Limit of 2 per customer.) Link updated

Editor’s note: This PR came in from OWC and I am a huge fan of their products and service. That said, I am traditionally not a big fan of Maxtor drives. They were recently purchased by Seagate (who’s products I love) and these Quickview drives are brand new, plus backed by a full 5-year Seagate fulfilled Maxtor factory warranty. So, when you add the awesome prices, OWC sales and support, and a Seagate backed warranty, these drives may be worth at least looking into.

    Be wary. Maxtor traditionally sucks. My uncle used to work for them and told me the quality and facilities were second rate. Maybe things have changed since they were bought up by Seagate.

    Yeah, I have heard BAD things about Maxtor… but a brand new line of drives, manufactured under the supervision of Seagate and backed by Seagate? I am seriously considering one.

    I do not see this price on the OWC site. Is it a special offer not regularly listed? And into which Mac models would this fit?

    There is one that fits the description for $159 http://eshop.macsales.com/item-specials/Maxtor/7H500F0/ . Don’t know if that’s the one that is being advertised or not…

    What computers can use the drive? The iMac??

    As tempting as this is, I had 5 Maxtor Drives (out of 5) go bad on me from 1999 to 2002. Never again. Made me do regular backups though (;
    I’ve had 12 WD drives (from 2001 till now) and never had one go bad.
    I’ve also had 4 Hitachi/IBM drives with good results too.
    Sorry but I’ll pass.

    In general, I too am a fan of OWC, but if you look carefully, you can find where they are making up for the sale. For anything that is not a special, they tend to be slightly to significantly over-priced.

    Just a word of warning to anyone thinking about maximizing their shipping costs when getting this awesomely priced drive.

    Now to scrounge up $270 for a set. I’d love to have a terabyte in my tower.

    Yeah, I don’t see this deal on the web site. I’ve had Maxtor drives before with no failures. Can I put this SATA drive in the iMac Intel Core Duo?

    These Maxtor Drives are internal drives. Will there be external drives on sale soon?

    Newegg has the same drive for $139.99 w/ FREE 3 business day shipping.
