Listener Jeremy just alerted me to the fact that Apple is giving away iMoive HD as a free download for iLife ’08 customers. As I mentioned on the special edition podcast, if you have older projects that use themes or FX they won’t work in the new version. Mac owners with G4 and older G5 systems will also need to keep iMovie HD as the new version requires a G5 1.9 GHz or better system. I took a look and the page does state, “iMovie HD 6, previously distributed with iLife ’06, is available for download for those who have purchased and installed iLife ’08.” The download is 154.6 MB, so I assume it is the full thing. I m not sure if it does a check to ensure iLife ’08 is on the same machine, so it may work for anyone. If you try it and it does, let us know.
Thanks Adam, My i life 08 came today and its still boxed. After seeing your post about I movie HD I went to the dissuasions area of apple.com and I think right now my 08 version is going to stay in the box. One of my mistakes was I assumed I could put it on all my macs, I purchased the family license and now I see its intel only, we have 2 intels but one is my son’s and he is not into video editing. I still worry that Apple inc has forgotten that Apple computer got them to where they are.
Adam, I have a PowerMac G5 1.6 GHz single processor with 768 MB RAM, and I didn’t see the new iMovie system requirements until after I ordered iLife ’08. However, once I received and installed it on my system, I found that the new iMovie works just fine on my PowerMac. Needless to say, I am very excited. I Just thought that other people might want to know that the new iMovie may run on their system even though it doesn’t meet Apple’s listed “requirements.”
Yea the downloaded iMove 06 checks. If iLife 08 is not installed the install program doesn’t continue
I tried it too, it says “Please install iLife ’08 before installing iMovie HD 6”
Me too
Thanks for saving me $20, Adam. I was considering the Family Pack, but I realize that my daughter’s G4 eMac and my old G3 iBook can’t handle iMovie at all (and would probably suck at iPhoto).
The only computer that can handle iMovie is my Dual 2GHz G5, so I just have to get the single license.
I am the only one interested in iWeb, iDVD and might play with Garageband.
Well, guess we see why a reason the new mini model was created…the new model barely meets minimum specs of iLife ’08. I am glad to read that iLife ’08 MAY work on my 1.83 Mhz mini…bet it would be a good idea to upgrade from 512 MB to 1 GB of ram, eh? Or just buy a new iMac, that is almost as cheap as adding Apple RAM!
:-)
I love OS X and iLife. Think I will sell my mini on ebay and then buy a new iMac.
very good!
