Hey Adam, hope things are well. I enjoyed your last “marathon” 2-hr podcast, lots of good info. I’ve noticed you’ve reference the “Digital Crown” available on the AppleWatch, and it seems you, and others I’ve heard, aren’t quite sure about that term. From my understanding, the reason it’s called a Digital Crown, is because the “crown”, standard on traditional watches, is a purely mechanical mechanism that winds the mainspring and moves the hands to set time.

Apple has replaced this mechanical function with an optical, multi-function mechanism, so it is now a purely digital mechanism instead of the older, mechanical (analog) design. The “optical” term was mentioned briefly in the keynote or in an interview I read shorty after, I can’t remember for sure. But, I’m sure that’s the main reason it’s referred to as a Digital Crown. As an EE, it’s fairly normal to apply the “digital” term, whenever a mechanical (analog) device, is replaced by something with no moving parts.

Anyway, that’s my understanding of why it is called that. I’m sure we’ll find out more as the watch gets closer to it’s release.

    All the best,
    – Alan

    Hi Adam,

I love the Maccast. But my favorite Maccast episodes are the Three Amigo ones. Please have less time in between this and the next Three Amigo episode. I love them! I have been listening and loving since 2011!

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Adam,
What a great podcast! You demystify tons regarding apple and have added to the microcosum, and you may be able to tell me something about Mac Mail in Mavericks that has become a bit of a puzzle to me.
Are we not supposed to edit the existing mail templates that are housed on our machines? Mavericks seems to have these hidden. In finder, under the Go menu, holding down option is supposed to reveal the Library.

Following the path User: Account>Library>Containers>com.apple.mail>Data>Library>Application Support>Mail>Stationary>Apple>Content>Resources.

I should see the template categories but in Mavericks, they aren’t visible.
Do you know how to get around this?

Thanks for any help or insight:)
    Robin

    Hi Adam,

I love the MacCast and always look forward to each episode. I have been doing a podcast for 7 years called John Selig Outspoken though not so often the past 2 years. I appreciate the work and time commitment you put into your outstanding podcast.

My 6 Plus arrived yesterday and wouldn’t you know it we had no cable, phone nor International because of severe weather from the day before. Still I got it up and running by backing up my 5 and loading from iTunes on my iMac.

You had me nervous from this episode. However, I love the 6 Plus! It fits in my hand and I type with my other hand and have done the same with all my iPhones. I love the new screen which is so crisp and easy to read. I went with the Plus for the added features including the camera and battery life. I will be using my iPads less because this screen is big enough to use for reading.

The Plus fits in my shirt pocket which is where I always have kept my phone.

Thanks for your great show. By the way, I am not a techie but I got to work with the computer as a beta site from Xerox that the two Steves saw at Parc that gave them the idea for the Lisa and the Mac. I met Woz at a conference here in Dallas last December and told him some things about the computer he didn’t know. Meeting him was a real high. I got a photo of us together and he signed my iPad 2 covet.

    Hi Adam,

Have followed you and The MacCast from the beginning and always enjoy each podcast and always learn something. Ditto re: David Sparks.

This episode prompted me to comment for the first time on a couple of topics.

    1. Obviously, you and Ken, at least, are not the target audience for the Apple Watch. For your audience, the Sport model will probably do the job – price and at least one satisfying, convenient function. For people with MONEY, the Edition is the one – glitz and glam – they could no more be bothered to change watch bands than wash their own cars – they’ll buy one to go with whatever outfit they wear it with even if they buy several. The question for me is the target audience of the middle Apple Watch. I am guessing that’s somebody like David – still wears a “watch” because of either habit or because he needs to know what time it is. Those folks do buy multiple watches and alternate them as whim sees fit. So, they need to be able to buy a basic watch and change the accessories easily. If the price runs 4 figures, that could be a limited audience.

1a. Don’t you all think Apple did some market research on how popular rectangular faces were compared to round ones and, at a minimum, found out that shape wasn’t a significant deciding factor?

    2. iPhones – if there weren’t a market for base price $650US phones in China, would they have bought 4+million the first weekend they went on sale? Your point about emerging markets wanting a single connection/computing device is well taken. Maybe not for the people who make $650US per year in income, but for the “upper classes” in those markets. Emerging markets do sell a lot of Mercedes’.

    3. Monetizing Apple Pay – selling more iPhones and Apple Watches notwithstanding, even if Apple only got $0.01/iPhone 6/6+ per day as their cut of Apply Pay purchases, $0.01 x 10,000,000 x 365 = $36,500,000 per year in revenue. My hunch is that they’re getting more than $0.01/transaction and that there will be more than 10,000,000 transactions per day going forward.

Love the show. Keep on trucking’
