Another extremely succinct, informative analysis of Tuesday’s official launch of the new iMacs and iLife/iWork suites. I had viewed the Steve Jobs presentation, but your take, from a first person perspective, provided additional insights into these new products.
I also walked down to my local Apple Store (Bethesda, MD) after the announcements to find that the staff wasn’t aware that anything new had been announced, or what had been announced. The manager did know that there was fresh stock, but he also said that he hadn’t gotten permission yet to display anything. This was almost 2 hours after the press event was done.
Cupertino may have been slow in telling the retail chain what to expect and when to display it. I half expected that the retail store would be closed while the even was going on to reset the new stock, opening back up at the end of the show.
How awesome is all this new Mac stuff? It feels SO good to have Mac related items to discuss, buy and get excited aobut for a change. Now i just gotta save those pennies for a new iMac.

Adam great show as always – nice to hear your views and things that sometimes I miss.
Just one thing, you said there was nothing for podcasters, perhaps not directly, but there is an auto-normalize feature, and also plenty more effects.
Adam – love the show. WARNING. Picked up my copy of iLife08 today and iMovie did not install. It requires Intel or G5 – no go with my Mac Mini.
It seems iLife ’08 was delayed because of the new version of iMovie, nothing to do with Leopard, it seems. On MacBreak Weekly it was suggested that iLife only meant to let you buy new Apple hardware, because of the new features. That is probably also the reason why iLife is so affordable.
Hi Adam — Great podcast!
In case no one is aware… be careful about custom configuring a new Mac! 2 weeks before the announcement I bought and custom configured a (now old) 24″ iMac. I had no idea that Apple was redesigning it otherwise I would have waited the two weeks. I’m very upset about it. So I called Apple about getting some kind of reimbursement. I was told that because I custom configured it (beyond the standard config) I was no longer eligible for any reimbursement which their pricing policy allows for. Had I not customized it I would have gotten a substantial amount back. I did get a $100 credit from the sympathetic customer service person though.
In case anyone was wondering about the configuration I got here are the specs:
24″ iMac (Ordered Tue July 24th – 2weeks before new iMac announcement)
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM – 2x1GB

I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t get some kind of notice during the checkout process that this iMac was going to be discontinued. Even some kind of notice after they processed my credit card which confirmed that I was a serious buyer not the press.
Either way, sorry for venting. I really like the iMac. It’s just the fact that I spent a lot of money for a now inferior system that bugs.
