It’s finally here and I am downloading it now. For sure I will be covering the new features and updates on the next show. One thing that was made VERY clear from the installer was Apple’s stern warning to iPhone un-lockers that the update would potentially permanently damage their iPhone (see below). So re-lock your iPhone or don’t do the update.
Update: Looks like there are some challenges for iPhone hacks even if they re-lock the iPhone prior to running the update. I just spoke with Shooby and he used the currently published re-locking procedures to relock and restore his iPhone. He reinserted his AT&T SIM and ran the 1.1.1 update. After update his AT&T SIM was invalidated. Now, we are not sure if the error is with the procedure he used to re-lock the phone or if this will be the experience for everyone, but at the very least it should server as a BIG warning. If you have a SIM unlocked iPhone, please wait for the iPhone Dev team to look into this before running the 1.1.1 update. Shooby is working with them now, so stay tuned.
I am left feeling a little flat by this iPhone upate. This update is really the iTunes WiFi store update, thats it. I thought we were going to see some new software (besides iTunes) on the iPhone, like MMS messaging, Copy and Paste, maybe an RSS reader, etc. I was so hoping for MMS. And the new settings Apple gave us are not that great. My guess is we will have to wait for these “major” upgrades until January at Mac World.
No offense intended, but if you hacked your iPhone and run this update after Apple’s warning about doing so and before waiting to see what other people’s experience is then you’re just asking for trouble.
I’m remaining patient for the extra adds from Apple… I feel a little bad for the people who just bricked their iPhones, but Craig’s right… Apple made it pretty clear what was going to happen. It’ll be interesting if they catch any real flack for it.
I think we’re going to have to wait until Leopard is released to see any big new functionality. The notes and tasks functions that are built-in to Leopard will probably be mirrored in the iPhone, but not until the end of October.
I don’t think we’re ever going to see MMS — Apple has decided that if you want to send a photo, you can do it through email. I’m really wanting a search function (I hate it when I’m trying to find a specific email and can’t search at the minimum by the “from” field).
Apple Computer Inc, excellent company with excellent products. Apple Inc., not so good company with good products. Since Apple dropped the “Computer” they have gone downhill, in my opinion. Or perhaps they are showing their true colors if they’re not backed by a community of third-party developers. Why can’t Apple understand that people want PDA functionality and extendibility, and get annoyed by Apple’s stalling?
This update is just lame. If Apple can’t do better, let others do it for them, as with their Mac platform. Where is that third-party application ability and iPhone SDK?
Guess that’s what happens when you set the bar so high?
While, as an iPhone owner who has already installed AppTap and some 3rd party apps I’m upset that there were so many features left out… As an Apple product user, I’m still QUITE impressed with the 1.0 effort. This is still, by far, the coolest, feature rich phone I’ve ever had.
