After listening to this interview, I decided to check out G-Technology and was pretty serious about picking up one of their 4 bay G Speed es RAID systems, but had a couple questions not answered on their website, so I gave them a call.
Regarding the HD’s, they use Hitachi which is great, but want $530 for ea additional module. Ouch! I just bought 4 1 TB Hitachi 7K1000’s from OWC to go into my newly ordered MacPro for $270 ea. (with $30 Hitachi rebate). That’s almost HALF of G-Technology’s price. I was also told any other user installed drives were not officially supported and would “void the warranty”. I could see a little markup by them, but not nearly 100%. That’s robbery.
So I then asked about their PCIe 4 port RAID controller card and whether it supported booting or not. The answer was “We don’t know. We haven’t tested it.” Huh??? Are you kidding me?
My advice. At these prices, you’re better off going with OWC who KNOWS their products, and charges competitive prices. You could buy double the amount of storage through them, or replace your RAID entirely with a new one for the price G-Tech wants for their stuff.
Just my 2¢.
