LOL, yes I also hear “no tech” instead of “know tech” on John’s podcast! A person who is far more of a geek than me would know the technical term for words like that. I saw one example in a PM I got today from a pal: “site” and “sight”. Somebody like Grammar Girl would know that word. Head for the Grammar Girl sight. (“Hey, were did you see that sight?”)
Its already turned into an Abbott and Costello routine. For that reason, I’d recommend stearing clear of those words as part of an audio show’s name, whatever they’re called. It’s because I’ve always been partial to Bob and Ray.
I think it’s super cool for John to be self-deprecating, but no one else can do the same thing. By definition, the same usage coming from anyone else automatically turns into “deprecating.” I’d never mean that so it doesn’t work me or for anyone except John. The rest of us have the fun challenge of characterizing his show “for real”. That was my problem with your usage, Adam.
Now I think it may actually be of some use to actually try to characterize the show from the POV of a listener. But right now it is just too damn hot–another 100 degree day. I am only air-cooled, not liquid cooled, so I will wait until it’s dark and cooler before I engage my mind. Like the iPad, my mind shuts down when its overheated.
I like the pre-produced audio ad, because it shows journalistic integrity to draw the line between the journalism and the business. Of course, with a podcast, the advertiser has to realize that some percentage of their listeners are going to fast-forward through their ad, but on the other hand such a fast-forwarding listener is probably not interested in the product anyhow, and the clear separation makes the advertiser look more honest too.
This is a good sign that the business is growing up, and I would like to hear more ads done that way.
Oh, and I forgot to say that the ad by Smile (formerly on My Mac) was very well done, and that helps. Since I never watch TV, I sometimes went to the Apple site to watch the latest “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC”
Ken really needs to understand what happened when the LoC made their recent jailbreaking decision. It did not make it OK to jailbreak. It only removed the ability for Apple to come after jailbreakers for violating copyright. Jailbreaking is still a breech of contract since Apple forbids it.
