External Storage? If I heard correctly, the question was from a guy who has a Mac Pro, stuffed with four hard drives.
He wanted to know about NAS. I have a NAS, WD World Book, connects to gigabit ethernet as a gigabit device. I timed it. The throughput to the drive is the SAME (within nanoseconds) as throughput to a cheap USB hard drive connected to the USB port on my Apple Airport Extreme. In short, at least that NAS drive is a loser.
Here’s what I would suggest for someone wanting to greatly increase storage, if that someone had a Mac Pro. Buy a USB 3.0 card. Buy a USB 3.0 drive dock from OWC or elsewhere. Buy two 3.0 drive docks! Buy two fast SATA drives. Copy back and forth. You will have the fastest storage possible, and be “future proofed” as USB 3.0 begins to replace 2.0 and also FW 800, unless the possible big bump to FW comes soon.
Thanks for suggesting that we use quality hard drive enclosures. That helped me isolate the problem with my Time Machine backup drive always going offline.
