I use ClamXAV and it has worked fine for me. Warner Music is showing the true colors of the record industry. They should be happy that people are willing to pay for single songs. We used to just download them for free. How quickly they forget.
Not sure what’s going on with these Nano scratch stories. My wife uses her ipod socks and they work fine. She has the black model too. Fingerprints are another thing. But I agree Adam, scratches happen on all iPods. I’ve used Brasso for years. I bought at a local grocery store.
I saw those ads too and thought it was an Apple ad. Seal confused me too. Isn’t it early for a MacIntel model or promo?
I was just contacted by a lawfirm known for class action lawsuits (and who already have one class action suit against Apple) with regard to the Nano scratching. I find that interesting.
Both Apple and many mac geeks are reporting (or defending) that the Nano uses the exact same plastic as the other iPods, and therefor the Nano doesn’t really scratch unless its user is careless or destructive. This is partially true… the Nano uses the same metal backing, the same white plastic enclosure on the front, but the face is also covered in a clear, soft resin not, to my knowledge, found on any current or previous iPod player. It is this clear resin that scratches easily – with a fingernail, coarse clothing, etc.
I just tested wiping the face of my newly replaced Nano with a paper towel and it instantly showed clear signs of hairline scratching and light diffraction. In my humble opinion, an iPod should be able to withstand the touch of a simple paper towel.
Any plastic or resin coating that is soft enough to be damaged by paper towel is not a viable resin for use in a hand-held, pocket-sized consumer product.
I’ve owned other iPods – the standard 20GB monochrome iPod, an iPod Shuffle and two iPod Minis – and none of them scratched under normal, careful use; with and without the use of enclosures. (I’m a tech-junkie and a clean-freak. All my belongings looks like new even years after purchase. I care for my things and expect my gadgets to survive normal, careful use.)
Adam – I heard the bit about the guys dropping their Nano out of a car, etc. Fine, funny, ha ha. But this Nano scratching thing is real and it’s a bit frustrating to hear folks, who don’t even have a Nano, directly or indirectly defend it’s honor, like it’s a sacred vestal virgin or something. I don’t care of the silver back gets scratched or finger-printy. That’s just normal. But when the clear resin front gets too marred to permit fonts to be read on screen, that’s when I say ‘no way, not ok’.

I hope I don’t sound like I am defending the Nano. I believe the comment I played from someone who has a Nano said it seemed to scratch easily. I have also read reports from Nano owners who claim they don’t scratch any more than a standard iPods. I am just trying to present both sides.

Hey Adam — in regards to steves problem,
I’ve never had this problem before, but i do have lots of experience with iMovie. I would say that he should check in his imovie’s folder (the one that he saves his movie to) and in there as u probably know is the movie and a folder which contains all of the video’s contents. I do belive that you can have video in there that isn’t in the clips pane of your imovie. So i think the first thing he should do is check in there to see if it even created the file at all – assuming that there is somthing wrong with his iMovie and not his camera. I think it might just be that its not being auto-imported into imovie.
I heard your recommendations to the listener who was asking for a good book for a rank beginner, his mom, to computers, but I don’t agree with them.
The Missing Manual book for Mac OS X is good for a basic Mac user or a switcher, but it doesn’t devote space to people with very little experience with computers in general.
The Tiger Unleashed book is strictly for Power Users. Most everyday Mac users will not be interested by many of the topics discussed. It will make a beginner cower in fear!
Everyone in my circle of friends and family has basic computer experience so I haven’t researched any books that cater to the brand new user who requires square-one introductory material. I hope you or your other listeners can look into this topic and give that guy’s mom a truly appropriate book for her needs.
