Great show and coverage of the “One More Thing” event. FYI, I updated both iTunes and QuickTime last night through system update on my iMac. So I guess the problem’s I’ve been hearing about have either been fixed or they’re sporadic.
Any word of wether the new iPods have the special features that the nano introduced (world clock, lap timer, secutity lock, etc)?
I set up iTunes 6 and everything runs fine, but I cannot buy music. When I click on “Buy Song” or even “Get Song” for free downloads, I get an error saying that my address is not a standard US-based address. It opens up a dialog box for me to fill in (again) my CC info and address, then it automatically asks for my county, then closes. When I try to buy music again, it goes through the whole “non-US address” baloney again. I have tried various iterations of my address and nothing will get me over this damn error. Bah!
I notice that the new iPods are not in-store yet. That stinks, however I’m quite certain I will be calling my local Apple stores daily/hourly like a clingy, needy stalker to see when FedEx brings in the goods.
Like a dope addict, I will buy the next better buzz offered to me by Apple, but I still remain in grumpy protest over the horrible video content selection offered via iTunes. It reminds me of living in Russia when there were only 3 state-run TV stations offering almost identical, thoroughly unenjoyable content. Blargh.
On that note, isn’t the point of iTunes that consumers can add their own content from CDs? Why not from DVDs?

The specs of the new video iPod indicate Apple has uncrippled the 8khz audio recording limit. Let’s hope there’s a software update unlocking this on all iPods. Great news for podcasters!

My eMac has no modem! That’s how I got mine almost 2 years ago.

Something odd–when I discovered late last night that Apple had released video iPods I immediately started looking for your latest Mac Cast, knowing you’d have something to say. Here’s the strange thing–I can find your 10/13 Mac Cast on iTunes on my PC, but when I search for it on any of my Macs the latest Mac Cast it finds is the 10/9 one. I actually had to download it on the PC and plug my shuffle in to hear it. In a few day’s time it will eventually appear on iTunes on the Macs. I just find it strange that it’s available for download on iTunes on the PC sooner. Any thoughts about why this is happening?

for dvd-ripping to iTunes, wouldn’t that require Quicktime Pro? that may be a feature in the future for QT Pro users.
Correct me if I’m wrong but ripping a DVD into iTunes would require getting around the copy protection included on most DVDs. To my knowledge any tampering with this protection is against the law and companies that create software to stip off the protection are being sued. If all this is true there is no way Apple can allow users to rip DVD movies without inviting multiple (and expensive) lawsuits.
It’s a shame though. What’s so different about copying a DVD to your iPod over a CD? If you ask me, the user license should include the ability to watch the movie however you want provided you are not putting it on public display.
@bruce, in Steve’s keynote he demoed some of the features carried over from the nano. I remember seeing world clock (now more shown on screen – either 3 or 4) and the security lock. Can’t remember seeing lap timer but I’d bet anything added to the nano will also be on the new iPods.

My lingering question is if the new iPods still support firewire for synching. Or if they took it out like they did with the nano. I would hate to have only the USB option for my iPods.

30GB:

The video iPod is USB 2.0 only (you can charge using FireWire, but no transfer). This means the end of using an iPod as a bootable hard drive (at least as long as they are PowerPC-based).
I set up my iPod to boot and did it once just to prove that it worked, but I haven’t used it that way since. Of course, I have a fire extinguisher that I’ve never used. Both are there in case of emergency, but thankfully, neither has been necessary yet.
Personally, I think $1.99 is too much for a show and the video feature is not interesting to me so far. If some cool video podcasts come out, I might change my tune. I use my iPod in a manner that was completely unintended originally. I listen to podcasts and audiobooks only, no music.
eMacs were originally designed for education only and is merely returning to that role. No big deal.
Nobody seems to make a big deal about the cooperation between Apple and Disney. With Michael Eisner COMPLETELY out of the picture, it is now possible for Disney and Pixar to resume negotiations about continuing their relationship.
Apple has certainly had to add a dedicated chip into the new ipods that does dedicated hardware h.264 decoding at 30fps. There’s no way the old ipods could do it. So I doubt any kind of firmware update is possible at all.
