Re the AppleCare controversy. I don’t know if you remember but I gave you a heads up about the European two year coverage some years ago and if I’ve known about it for that long, Apple has, too.
I think this foot dragging by Apple is only going to give it a bad name amongst consumers. Here in the UK we’ve had problems with mis-selling of all types of products (payment protection insurance on loans, interest swaps for small businesses, etc), all of which have put the institution(s) in question in the dog house and cost them a lot of money in compensation claims. I wouldn’t be surprised if mis-selling of product protection like AppleCare becomes the ‘next cause celebre’.

RE: The Time Capsule segment: I decided to go the route of buying an Airport Extreme and then mounting my own external drive to it for Time Machine backups. It was 100% smooth sailing once I did two things:
1) deleted my pre-existing Time Machine backup, actually all data on the drive in a quick one-pass delete in Disk Utility, and
2) the Time Machine plist file in the top level (vs. user folder level) system Library: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (<–that's necessary, period.)
Before YOU do 1 OR 2, I need to tell you that I may be something of a bonehead; I vaguely recall blithely ignoring/OK-ing a prompt somewhere in the process that for all I know was prompting me to direct OS X to resume the pre-existing Time Machine backup from the new (network) location. So the process just might-might be easier that the above process. I did it my way to make sure my MacBook Pro would be forced to ask me to designate a drive… and I still like the idea of nuking the old backups, you never know what little gremlin might he hiding in the migration.
Why doesn't Apple officially support this? I am 100% certain it's not a tech issue. Just like Apple wouldn't support the Aftermarket Seagate internal drive I installed on my MBP, or third-party RAM, Apple's just being Apple, and wants to avoid the multivendor service nightmares so common in the Microsoft anti-ecosystem. But this shouldn't stop anyone but a novice from network backups.
BTW: I've been lurking and listening since the very first MacCast in… 2004? '05? What a hoot it is to think back to the rumors of yore, like: will video ever come to the iPod?!
Correction to my post minutes ago: Step 2 had some missing words. I meant to say that I deleted the Time Machine plist. Sorry for any confusion, Macophiles!
