Gutting the MacBook

macbook_guts.jpg I personally can’t watch all those surgery shows on Discovery Health Channel. Seeing human innards makes my stomach turn. Seeing this is almost worse. The folks over at Other World Computing (OWC) have already performed surgery on a new 15″ MacBook Pro. It’s cool to see, but at the same time a bit horrifying. The good news is I already read on MacDevCenter that this model is easier to dissect than the current PowerBook. That should make things like future hard drive upgrades a bit nicer. I just hope the folks at OWC got this one put back together and working.

wow, it is pretty cool and i bet the voided Apple care. Where is the core duo chip? i cant find it anywhere on the mother board. Is in the box behind the Seagate HD? or is it on the bottom of the mother board? i think it might be on the bottom because of how the fans are located, i think the cooling the bottom part.

I saw this over on digg earlier today.

Adam (and other commenters), I’m a big fan of your work in general, but this article is a touch overly dramatic!

This is hardly a gutting at all! They have just opened the case so that you may see the insides, they haven’t undone one cable/ribbon or broken anything! Not to worry guys!

I rip my iBook up much worse than this when i replace the hard drive, which I have had to do twice now! Once for upgrade, and once ’cause my spindle started whining….

It all goes back together without a problem. I have to say that this is reall nothing more than a peek inside, the only thing that is taken apart is the RAM, and obviously that pops right back in…

They just popped the hood, so to speak, so that you can see the ‘engine’.

To put your concerns to rest, you’ll notice that later the next day, they benchmarked the computer, sooooooo, don’t call the undertaker just yet!

    Cheers!

P.S. I believe that i can now swap drives in my ibook in less than an hour now, it’s not that difficult… really!

Keep up the great work Adam!!

CC, Just so you know this posting was meant to be fun and tongue and cheek. I know they didn’t destroy the MacBook.

Shows how small it could be if we abandoned optical drives and miniaturized our harddrives.
