Hi Adam,
regarding the “keeping everything in one place” Just wanted to say that I have achieved it by developing a combination of few manual steps and a workflow in HAZEL, in a nutshell what I do is:
– rip DVD or Blu-ray
– Encode it in MP4
– pass it through FilmTag
– Import it into my shared iTunes library
Now the Apple tv will show my movie library as it was downloaded directly from the iTunes Store, with all the movie cover, info, trama etc.
Hope this can help you save some money in iTunes purchases. ;-)

Regarding pulling the plug. I have done so in two locations using http://www.tvfool.com to check what channels that I would get first and using the printout to aim the antenna. In Dayton I got 19 channels that replaced 90% of the content I was getting. Not too shabby for free!!
The second step in the signal chain was to build a HTPC using http://www.htguys.com/mac-mini-video-server. As all my favorite shows are automatically uploaded to iTunes it, they are available to download to my iPad for viewing on plane trips. No need to worry about HDCP issues.
Second Item: Regarding scanners and printers, I had a similar issue with Mavericks not talking to a Scanjet 4890, HP will not update the drivers (dated) and VuScan uses the base HP driver…
One other alternative that you did not mention is using a VM. I have VMware installed for the yearly tax season software and occasional windows office software use. It was a simple matter to create a Virtual machine with OSX Lion that would talk to my HP Photo scanner. As a bonus having the VM allowed me to incrementally upgrade any software that would not run in Mavericks.
