So, when they give you a “100 GB” (gigabytes) disk, it means that there are 100 billion bytes on there. As the system uses the 1024-base it sees it as a 93,13 GB (gibibytes).

You are correct about the hard drive mfg. using 1kB = 1000B and computer mfg. using 1KB = 1024B.
My iMac G5 has a 160GB (160 billion bytes) drive and Get Info shows its capacity as 148.93GB.
1KB = 1024
1MB = (1024)(1024) = 1048576
1GB = (1024)(1024)(1024) = 1073741824
Taking 160 Billion bytes and dividing by (1024)^3 = 149.0 GB.
The issue of file system tables (mentioned by your Netherland’s listener) is the reason a newly initialized drive will show less than 149GB availble (even when the drive appears to be empty.)

Sorry Adam, but quite honestly…how can you agree based on some sort of capitalist ethic. I don’t think it’s right I guess you do.
How can you not agree on this point, seriously. I mean would you pay $150 more? Get an ipod instead. I say screw Apple on this one, sorry man.

I would NOT pay $150.00 more. That was exactly my point. Everyone is complaining about this “black tax”, yet they still buying the product. Apple store reps I have spoke with say the black is out selling the white. As long as that keeps happening then Apple will only continue the price premium strategy. As a matter of fact the more successful it is this time the more likely they are to do it again on future models. If we want to stop Apple we need to boycot the black MacBook. Every person who complains about it and the goes right out and buys it anyway is only adding to the problem. Sorry, but I don’t fault a company for giving consumers what they obviously want and charging them for it.
So sad about apple going closed source…
Ummm… isn’t OS:X based on open source Debian… aren’t they required by the open source license to make public any and all their changes?
Just some questions, here. If they’ve closed the source, who, then, is being paid royalty fees?
Personally, I was looking forward to being able to purchase or build a version of OS:X to run on my PC.
Without a doubt, I can create a box that runs faster, costs less, and looks better than anything apple will ever release. Adding OS:X, which I already enjoy on my DP G5, would be icing on the cake. Too bad that I now have to look towards Gates and his XP/Vista.
I’ll never buy a closed system PC from Apple, but I would’ve been happy to buy their OS even without support. I imagine I’m not alone…
Well, Mac probably has to set up a whole new production line jsut to make the black Macs; so it makes sense, the black ones will sell a bit higher. Maybe after the intial investment is paid off, they can lower the price. For those folks who want to blend in with the non-Mac geeks.
