Hi Adam, I’ve just listened to this week’s episode, and wanted to comment on two things.
The first is my experience with the fusion drive. I purchased a top of the line 5K iMac last fall, and in the end weighed the pros and cons and decided to opt for the 2 terabyte fusion drive. Personally, I couldn’t be happier with it. I normally juggle roughly ten applications in my day to day, and I find that they always pop open instantly. There are moments when exporting files from garage band or iMovie that I imagine the flash storage would be a huge improvement, but in general it is a really snappy machine, and runs like butter.
I use iCloud for my photo library and am an Apple Music subscriber, but I prefer to have everything locally stored on my main machine. The price for upgrading to a decent size flash drive when I purchased this mac wasn’t justifiable to me. I imagine years from now when I upgrade to a new mac, I will go with flash storage, but hopefully the prices will be lower by then.
I also wanted to comment on the complaints about the lack of updates to the desktop line. It seems like everyone has forgotten or fails to mention that Apple made significant updates to the entire iMac line roughly a year ago. Do people really expect spec bumps across all Macs every year on the dot? I understand the complaints for the Mac Pro and Mac Mini… but I think the iMac is still a wonderful and up-to-date machine by today’s standards. If the updates are substantial, is it really necessary to update them more frequently than on an 18 month cycle?
You asked about our opinion of a new iPhone SE. I bought mine last summer and I’m thoroughly satisfied. It’s really fast and fits nicely in my pocket. I hope to use it as long as it doesn’t slow down from iOS upgrades.
