I haven’t listened to today’s show yet, but kudos on covering the Zune (what a gimmicky piece of crap). One of my blogger friends was just invited to a special Zune preview party in LA last week, and even as someone who owns a PC/is definitely not a Mac Geek, he said that the Zune was incredibly lame. Vive le iPod!
another great show Adam, keep it up;
btw here’s how i mute the startup sound of my mac:
I simply mute the volume before shutting it down. The next time I switch it on, there is no startup sound.
I also have a 17″ Powerbook (purchased April 2005) that has recently experienced the infamous 1-pixel vertical lines – two have propogated on my screen. I have AppleCare and will take mine to a local certified Apple repair. I also am following the thread Adam linked in the show notes and printed out the discussion thread to take with me to the repair store. Listener Elizabeth’s experience of getting a cosmetic excuse from her Apple repair is ridiculous(!) I know another who had the same lines problems (he had at least 8 lines) get his 17 inch screen entirely replaced – fortunately he had Apple Care. I can’t imagine how expensive a replacement cost for a new screen would be! Certainly a lot more than the cost of AC.
On stopping the start up sound. A program I use is called MacPilot, it disables the sound (amongst other things) and I’ve never had any problems with my eMac after using it.
Hi adam, bad news this maccast won’t play on my 5th gen iPod or iTunes 7. It compleatly stops at about 15:28. Whats going on?
Luke,
I have a 5th gen iPod too and it play well all the way. Just for your information. I have no clue what could be wrong with yours.
Luis
Mine did the exact same thing, Luke.
I would never advise anybody to buy a refurbished Mac. To me that’s like buying somebody elses problem. It’s been returned for a reason, and Apple might or might not have fixed it correctly. Yes it still has a warranty, but do you want that headache? In my line of work (Apple certified Mac tech) I’ve seen plenty of refurb Macs, and most have had to be sent back for repairs, some numerous times. Especially the flat panel iMacs.
It just doesn’t seem worth taking that chance in order to save $150.
Luke and Dani,
So far these are the only two reports i have on this issue. So it seems to be isolated. Were you able to re-download? any one else with this issue, please email me. Thanks.
Adam,
You mentioned paint comming off of black macbooks. I ran accross a product from Marware that could benefit some macbook/powerbook/macbook pro owners. I found mine at an apple store. I don’t think I paid $35 for it, more like $20-30. Here is a direct link:

Short Version: http://tinyurl.com/yabg2w
The texture is almost like a soft felt or leather. It peels off WITHOUT leaving any residue behind.
Have used one on my 12″ powerbook for about 1 year and my MacBook (black) for about 3 months and really like it.
It keeps the palm rest from getting discolored or scratched and the paint from being worn. Have no idea how long they will last since I haven’t worn mine out yet.
Keep up the good work,
Dave
Snooped the Marware website some more and found the product I actually use. The price is $19.95. Includes palmrest and keyboard cover.

Comes in White and Black. Site says NOT to use black version on White MacBooks.
Dave
I too had no problems listening to the podcast on my 5th Gen iPod
If you hold down the mute button (F3) on startup, it automatically mutes the music, and doesnt affect the actual volume when in tiger.
Great show by the way
My problem was with the enhanced version. It kept stopping in the same place, after 15 minutes or so. The chapters were also messed up, and only showed the chapters from that first 15 minutes. I tried playing in quicktime, too and it did the same thing. I was able to listen to the episode by getting the mp3 version from your site.
I just picked up a Zune yesterday – (I have already owned 4 different iPods and still own the video) and I must say that I really like it. It has much to offer that the iPod does not – larger video screen, wi-fi, fm radio, nice interface. I think with time and a few hacks (Dvorak agrees), this will be the #2 player. I am a huge Mac geek – I even got myself certification in the Mac OS and I own a number of macs. I think it would be a huge mistake to write off the Zune. I thought it might be a mistake when I bought one the other day – but I must say that I am really impressed.
