The Basics
- Control Center
- Swipe up from bottom of the phone
- Features
- Toggles for Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and the Orientation Lock.
- Brightness controls

- AirDrop and AirPlay
- Flashlight, clock, calculator and Camera.
- Settings > Control Center
- Enable/Disable access from Lock Screen or inside Apps
- In apps, unfortunately, is universal, not App specific.
- VoiceOver
- with VoiceOver enabled hold a finger at the center of the top or bottom of the screen
- it will play a sound similar to the pass-through gesture sound
- Then swipe to get at Control or Notification center.
- Notification Center
- Slide Down from top

- Today
- Shows an overview of your day
- Uses “real” language
- Today and Tomorrow summaries, calendar, weather, reminders, next destination (based on current location).

- Control Lock Screen Access. Turn off Today view in Lock Screen
- Control what info shows up in Today view.

- Choose Wallpaper. Apple has one dynamic in various colors and a bunch of stills options
- Choose from My Panoramas, to pick panos from your photo library
- These will pan with the accelerometer behind your home screens.
- Turn off parallax motion

- If you’ve set a timer it’s now displayed on the lock screen, under the time.
Settings
- Text size
- Settings > General > Text Size
- Set up ‘Dynamic Type’ preference
- Let’s you adjust the font size or all text in apps that support Dynamic Type. Apple’s apps have been updated to support it.
- Set bolder fonts
- Settings > General > Accessibility
- Toggle on Bold Text
- Turning on requires restarting your device.
- App data usage
- Settings > Cellular
- Scroll down to the ‘Use Cellular Data For’ section.
- Data used will be displayed under each app that has used cellular data.
- You can toggle on or off as needed
- What you doin’ back there?
- apps can update their data in the background which may or may not have benefit for you.
- Settings > General > Background App Refresh
- turn on or off completely or control setting for specific apps
- Turning some or all off might help increase battery life.
- Blocking
- Settings > Messages > Blocked, or Settings > FaceTime > Blocked
- Tap ‘Add New…’ and choose who to block from contacts.
- You can remove a block by tapping Edit and then the Unblock button.
- Can also block from the app by tapping the ‘i’ icon and selecting ‘Block Caller’
- More contrast
- Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast
- removes some of the translucency in some areas
- Better mapping.
- Settings > Maps > Preferred Directions. Set Driving vs walking.
- Who’s watching me?
- Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Frequent locations
- see what places you hang out at and for how long
- tap an entry to get a map of all your recent hangouts.
- disable tracking by toggling the ‘Frequent Locations’ option off
- you can also clear the history by tapping the ‘Clear History’ button
AirDrop
- Allows you to send files from device to device
- Uses Bluetooth to do the handshake
- Then sets up an ad-hock wi-fi connection for faster file transfers.
- Slide open the Control Center and tap the ‘AirDrop’ area
- Choose your level of exposure
- Off, Contacts Only, Everyone
- Contacts only will match only people in your Contacts whom you have an iCloud email address for.
- Tap the Share button in a compatible app and choose ‘AirDrop’
- Notes, Contacts, Voice Memos, Photos, Safari, Passbook, Maps, And Podcasts
- 3rd party apps as they enable the feature
- In the sheet you should see anyone else in range how is available to AirDrop to
- Select the person, or multiple people and tap ‘Send’
- Depends on their AirDrop discoverability settings (Off, Contacts Only, Everyone)
- Works over wi-fi or ad-hoc
- The person will get an Alert and be asked to accept, or decline, the shared document.
- You get a preview of photos before having to accept
- when you accept it jumps into the appropriate app, so be aware if your in the middle of the perfect Angry Birds game.
- AirDrop works on the iPhone 5/5s/5c, 4th generation iPad, iPad mini, and 5th generation iPod touch.
- Can’t, yet, AirDrop from iOS to Mac or vice versa
Siri
- New voice
- Settings > General > Siri > Voice Gender
- Can now access and control specific settings
- Say things like, “open wi-fi settings”.
- Control items accessible by Control Center
- Web search results and image searches powered by Bing.
- Twitter search
- More Yelp integration and Open Table for reservations.
- Play Voicemail or list missed calls. You can also choose to have Siri call the person back.
- Full music control, including iTunes Radio
- Was Voice Control
- Play, pause, skip.
- Ask what song or artist is playing.
Apps
Music
- iTunes Radio
- Setup stations
- Add artists or albums to stations
- Tap ‘Edit’
- Choose the station
- Under ‘Play More Like This’ tap the ‘+’ to add an artist, genre, or song
- you can also use the ‘Never Play This’ section to block a song from the station.
- Swipe left and tap ‘Delete’ to remove items.
- Also while listening you can tap the ‘star’ icon to select ‘Play More Like This’ or ‘Never Play This Song’. This can be done from the player in Control Center too.
- Adjust hits, variety, discovery by tapping the ‘i’ icon and adjusting the ‘Tune This Station’ slider.
- Allow explicit lyrics by tapping the ‘i’ icon and toggling the ‘Allow Explicit Tacks’ switch.
- Buy tracks by pressing the price in the upper right
- Tap the ‘star’ icon to add to wish-list
- Tap ‘History’ to see past songs and to review items on your Wish-list.
- Siri commands
- Play iTunes Radio {Station}
- I like this song
- Never play this song.
- If you go to the ‘iTunes Store’ app you can see a song history
- Tap the ‘History’ icon (list with three dots and lines) in the upper right
- Three tabs, Wishlist, Radio, Previews
- ‘Radio’ will show all the song history ordered by radio station and device
- Whishlist will have your whishlist items and Previews shows any trailers you’ve watched from the Trailers App, iTunes, or on your Apple TV.
- Ratings
- Ratings are still there in the Now Playing view, but a bit hidden.
- Tap the album art and they should fade in over the player controls in the Artist/Track area.
- More subtle than the old “flip” to list view
- You can then tap or slide to rate the track.
- You can also still rate from list view, but needs more taps
- Tap the list icon (in upper right) on the Now Playing screen
- Tap ‘Rating’
- The Stars will slide in under the Track.
- You can tell which track as it will have a little “EQ” animation to the left of it.
- Redeem Gift Cards with camera
- Open iTunes Store (tap the ‘Store’ button in the Music app)
- Scroll to bottom and tap the ‘Redeem’ button
- Enter your Store ID username and password.
- Tap the Use Camera button and scan the barcode on your card.
- You can also opt to still enter the number manually. Tap the ‘You can also enter you code manually’ option to get a text input and keyboard.
Camera
- Swipe to switch between Cameras
- Tap to view the live filters.
- Burst mode, press and hold the shutter button.
- Works on older devices, but you get all photos
- On iPhone 5s, it will group the shots into a series and show the ‘favorites’. You can open the set and tag more favs.
Photos
- Photos auto organized into ‘Collections’
- Also have ‘Shared’ and ‘Album’ views
- Shared is any iCloud shared photo streams.
- Access and leave comments, add new images to shared streams.
- Your Photostream still is an Album and appears under ‘Albums’.
- In moments you can tap and hold to drag over to see a larger thumbnail.
- Flickr and Vimeo sharing are now built in.
Compass
- Has built in level
- Swipe left
- Also crosshairs on the center of the compass
- Supposed to make it more accurate
Messages
- FaceTime audio calls
- While in an iMessage text tap the ‘Contact’ button
- Tap the ‘phone’ icon. You are given the choice for ‘Voice Call’ or ‘FaceTime Audio’
- Can also start a call from the FaceTime app, by tapping Contacts and taping the ‘phone’ icon next to the ‘FaceTime’ entry.
- Initiate a call from Siri saying, “FaceTime Audio {name}.”
- Check the data usage in the FaceTime app
- Tap the ‘Recents’ tab at the bottom
- Tap the blue ‘i’ icon to get the call details.
- Shows the duration and amount of data in and out.
- Slide over to get time stamps
- Deleting Messages
- Tap the message bubble
- Tap ‘More…’
- Tap the ‘Delete’ option
- Now you can select messages, they will be marked with a blue checkmark, and then tap the ‘Delete’ ( trash icon).
- Also under ‘More’ is the option to Copy a message.
- See a full name
- Now in a Message you will only see the persons first name at the top of the Message view. Usually the full name in the list.
- This can be adjusted in Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars
- Under ‘Contacts’ tap ‘Short Name’
- When the ‘Short Name’ option is on you can set it to first name and last initial; first initial and last name; first name only; or last name only.
- There is also a setting to ‘Prefer Nicknames’
Safari
- Close tabs by sliding left, at least on iPhone and iPods.
- In the tabbed view quickly enable ‘Private’ browsing.
- New ‘@’ tab in bookmarks for links from people you follow on Twitter
- Universal search and location bar
- annoyingly only shows the top level domain when you aren’t entering text.
- Swipe left bezel to the right to go back (right bezel to the left to ho forward) . This also works in other apps, like Mail, Messages, and Settings.
Mail, Contacts, and Calendar
- Tap the ‘Search’ icon in Calendar to get a timeline list view of all your upcoming events.
- Contact photos are now cropped in a circle.
- Tap the ‘Edit’ button
- Tap the Photo image to edit
- Select ‘Edit Photo’
- Move and scale by dragging and pinching.
- Tap ‘Choose’ when done.
- For frequently emailed contacts Mail will attempt choose the appropriate ‘from’ address when composing from the universal linbox
- So if you email a work colleague, Mail will change the address to your work one.
- You can tap the ‘From’ field to bring up a list and change it.
- For IMAP and iCloud accounts you can also set a default ‘From’ address in the Mail Settings
- Settings > General > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, choose the IMAP account
- Tap the account email address
- Under ‘IMAP Account Information’ tap the Email
- From here you can select the default address and also add new ones to show up in the from list for this account
- This only is available for pure IMAP accounts. If you have GMAIL you can re-set them up using the IMAP option. Backup first and be careful.
