iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite
OS X Yosemite
- You’ll be tempted to upgrade right away (if you haven’t already). Many of you should hold off
- There will be bugs. Do you really want to have to fight them?
- Some 3rd party apps might not work day one. Check Roaringapps.com
- If you really must, consider a second machine or external drive (or partition) first
- If you do upgrade here’s some tips
- Create a USB installer before you install
- The simple way is to use DiskMaker X
- Download OS X Yosemite, quit the installer, run DiskMaker X, insert a 8GB (or larger) Flash drive and follow the on-screen instructions
- You can use Disk Utility
- The steps are fairly drawn out and involve viewing the installer package contents, locating the installer image file, running some Terminal commands, and using Disk Utility to write the installer image onto a bootable 8GB or larger USB stick.
- Macworld has the step by step instructions
- You can use the Terminal
- The ‘createinstallmedia’ command
- Macworld has the step by step instructions
- Backup, Backup, Backup
- I usually pull a whole extra bootable SuperDuper Backup on an extra HDD that I might have lying around.
- For most folks an over the top upgrade should do fine
- If your Mac under the current OS is giving you fits consider a clean install
- Make sure you have all your Application keys handy (I use 1Password for this)
- Boot from the USB stick you created earlier (hold down Option at boot)
- Run Disk Utility and erase the main hard drive (you have at least two backups, right?)
- Run the OS X Yosemite Installer
- On boot use the Migration Assistant to restore your Users folders and settings.
- Re-install your apps fresh
- How to tell if your Mac supports Handoff
