We all know that Apple and our Macs come with a bunch of built in protections to keep us as safe a possible from viruses and malware
*
But there is a flaw in that protection, and that's us. And if not you, then likely a friend or family member who is not quite a tech savvy or aware. As much as we try to help or protect them from themselves things happen.
*
You've likely heard me mention Malwarebytes on the show in the past. I really think is the best and easiest tool on the Mac for quickly scanning, removing, and preventing Malware.
*
Proven Malwarebytes technology crushes the growing threat of Mac malware.
*
Malwarebytes scans the average Mac in under 30 seconds, removing adware and unwanted programs that slow your Mac.
*
And when you need more active protection Malwarebytes detects and removes viruses, ransomware, and other malware in real time with advanced anti-malware technology. Catches dangerous threats automatically, so you’re protected without having to even think about it.
*
Finally, cybersecurity smart enough for the Mac. Visit Malwarebytes.com/mac for your free download and 14-day trial of their Premium offering.

Apple settles with Qualcomm
*
The timing was incredible as opening arguments in their trail had started here in San Diego
*
I don't want to go into great details because I don't like lawsuit stuff, but this is big news and there is some good business news here.
*
All the lawsuits are over and Apple will enter a six year licensing deal with Qualcomm
V
Then there was the fallout. Intel announced it's getting out of the 5G modem business.
*
It's really not clear if that was because of the Qualcomm settlement or if it caused the Qualcomm settlement
*
Many are speculating, but no one knows.
V
Fast Company reported that Apple has a team of 1,000 to 1,200 engineers working on modem chips.
*
I don't think that changes with this settlement
*
Apple will eventually make their own modem chips, maybe integrated
*
They will still need to license Qualcomm tech and patents to produce those. That doesn't change.
*
Earliest timeline for an Apple modem is 2021
*
We will not see 5G in iPhone's this year. We will not likely see Qualcomm modems in this years iPhones.

*
More in App printing controls
V
Apple merging "Find My" apps
*
Guilherme Rambo at 9to5 Mac is reporting that Apple has plans to merge the Find My iPhone and Find My Friends apps into a single new App in a project under the codename "Green Torch"
*
The app would be available for both Mac and iOS
*
Has a new feature called "Find Network" that allows devices to be tracked even when not connected to Wi-Fi or to a cellular network.
V
The report also claims Apple is developing a device that would allow you to track any item via the app.
*
Basically a "tag" that you could attach to any physical item, like your keys.
*
It would be paired to your iCloud account by placing the tag near your phone.
*
Get a notification when the tagged item is moved too far away from the phone. Can add locations to ignore that feature.
*
Locations of tagged items could be shared
*
Add your contact info to a tag. When the tag is in "lost mode" any iOS device could read and display that info.
*
The new app could be shown of at WWDC. The new hardware might be announced in September along with new iPhones

Apple Pencil blocks car access?
*
Apple updated their support article for their new Apple Pencil 2 with a note about an odd interference scenario
*
In some instances a charging Apple Pencil may prevent your car's keyless entry key FOB from working.
*
Say if the two items were next to each other in a bag or purse.
*
The interference only happens if the pencil is actively charging
*
Fix is to move the FOB away from the Apple Pencil or detach the Apple Pencil so it's not charging.

I'm guessing there are some environmental factors, and i'm not talking cleanliness or eating habits.

Apple as a "services" company
*
James had some comments and concerns that he sent me in an email
V
"I just had a few comments about the possible future of Apple. Apple has always been a company that produces high-end, high-margin hardware accompanied by most excellent software. However as we know, hardware is now “too good”. For the average person there is no need to upgrade a phone, iPad, computer very frequently – their existing devices are too good. So Apple has chosen to enter crowded markets where they have no expertise. The new streaming service joins a very competitive field. many people have Amazon prime and for them the free streaming service is sufficient. For people who want more, Netflix is the next option. Apple is going to be competing with some very successful companies at something they have no experience in. There have been many rich people who made money in other fields that decided to produce movies and ended up losing lots of money. and now Tim Cook et al. want to direct their producers (don’t do anything mean or nasty) yeah that’s really going to work for movies in this day and time. Do they think they’re going to rival Disney?"
*
I don't think, and Apple has said as much, that Apple expects to "rival" any other streaming video service, at least not at first
*
Apple Music was looked at as an underdog as well, and now surpasses Spotify in the US for paid subscribers.
V
"If you want to see a successful services company, look at Microsoft today. I don’t think Apple at least at this time rivals Microsoft for services."
*
Microsoft Intelligent Cloud (includes enterprise services, like Azure) revenue at 9.4 billion in Q2 2019, Apple Services revenue was $10.9 billion in Q1 of 2019.
V
"As far as the credit card you said you were excited about Apple offering 3% off Apple products. Look at my Amazon card which I use much more frequently than I do my Apple purchases. It gives 5% back for Amazon purchases – in my case that is much more useful than measly 3% discount from Apple which I will use about every year or two. My second credit card is a visa the gives the standard 2% back for every purchase regardless of the category. So you don’t have to figure out if you’re getting 1% 2% or 3%."
*
Yes, if you make a lot of Amazon purchases, then having an Amazon card is a better idea than the Apple Card, at least for your Amazon purchases
*
My only point, for me, was that I buy a lot of Apple services, movies, software, apps, and products from Apple stores, so getting 3 percent back on those purchases seems like a good idea for me.
*
You still also get 2 percent at every other place were you use Apple Pay.
V
"I love what Apple has done and how I have enjoyed their products, but I feel like they are going down an unknown road trying desperately to recover their growth. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see Johnny Ives being useful For Apple news plus, or Apple streaming service. So they are wasting a lot of good engineering trying to do something they have no experience in. Hope I’m wrong"
*
I will be the first to say I have GIANT fears about Apple heading down this path when they announced the iPhone. I didn't want Apple to become Sony.
*
I was so, wrong.
V
So some points
*
You’re not unfounded in your concerns. It’s a somewhat risky move. I say somewhat because they still have a LOT of cash on hand and they are moving pretty cautiously into the space.
*
This is a “bridging” move and not the “next big thing”. This gets Apple past peak iPhone and to the next hardware thing.
*
The engineering talent is NOT going to waste. They are working on stuff we just don’t know about yet. AI, computer learning, chips, automation, autonomous systems, AR, VR, etc. What’s the hardware? We have the rumors… Cars? Glasses? Maybe. More likely something Apple has thought of, but we won’t see until they announce it.
*
I said the same thing about they getting into a business they know nothing about when they announced the iPhone. Look what happened there.
*
Bottom line, the thing you’re most right about is that Apple has "a lot of good engineering”. They also have a very smart and talented leadership. They also have been counted out, maybe more than any other company on the planet, and they are still here.

Adding iOS Fonts
*
I got a great question via Twitter, "Can I transfer OT fonts from macOS to iOS?"
V
The answer is yes and it's a bit complex, but not too bad.
*
Also, app support might be limited depending on what you want to do.
*
You can generally install and transfer TTF and OTF fonts.
*
You'll need to copy them to a cloud storage location like iCloud, Dropbox, etc. so you can access them, say via the Files app, on your iOS device.
V
The fonts will need to be converted, or added really, to an iOS 'Profile'
*
Profiles are accessed through Settings > General > Profiles
*
There are apps to do this, a good one is [AnyFont](https://anyfont.app), $1.99 USD and $0.99 in app purchase for a library of 1000+ fonts.
V
To install a font:
*
Install the 'AnyFont', or similar app.
*
Transfer the font to your device storage (Dropbox, iCloud, etc)
*
Select the font and click the 'Share…' icon
*
Tap the 'Open In…' option and select your Font loading app (i'll be using AnyFont)
V
In AnyFont, tap the "Install own Fonts" tab, then tap the font to install it
V
You'll see a "warning" message about this "website" is trying to download a configuration profile
*
You'll need to tap 'allow'
*
It is a "localhost" site in the app running locally on your device.
*
The it will confirm the profile was "downloaded"
V
Now you'll need to go to Settings > General > Profiles to "activate" the font
*
Tap on the "downloaded" font profile
*
Tap 'Install' (upper right)
*
Enter your passcode
*
Tap "Next" on the "This configuration profile installs the font" screen
*
Tap install on the "Unsigned Profile" warning screen. Tap Install again.
*
Tap Done.
*
Now your font should be available in apps like Pages, Keynote, Word, Excel, etc.
V
To remove the font, just delete the profile from Settings > General > Profiles
*
Tap the font profile
*
Tap remove profile
*
Enter your passcode
*
Tap Remove
