Apple third-quarter 2019 results
Apple had their largest third quarter EVER. By 1 percent. ;)
$53.8 billion in revenue with just over $10 billion in profit
Revenue was up almost across the board.
Mac revenue was up 11% year over year at $5.82B
iPad revenue up 8% at $5.02B
Services up 13% at $11.46B and "other" (wearables, home, acc) up 68% at $5.53B
Guess what wasn't up? Yup, iPhone. Down 12% year over year.
Also, for the first time in a long time iPhone makes up less than 50% of Apple's overall revenue at 48%
Services are at 21%, Macs at 11%, Other (wearables, home, accessories) at 10%, and iPad at 9%
Still there are more active installed iPhone's in the market than ever, up slightly from a year ago. Shows lots of people are happy with the iPhone they have. Lots more potential for services.
The new Macbook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Pro and Apple Pro Display don't factor into the Mac numbers.
The services growth is significant especially considering we've got many new services that aren't even here yet
Apple Card, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+
Odds and ends
Apple would like to keep making the Mac Pro in the US
"We've been making the Mac Pro in the United States and we want to continue doing that."
The Wall Street Journal said that the upcoming 2019 Mac Pro will be assembled by Quanta Computer in China.
iPad growth is happening as the overall global tablet market declined 5% in the third quarter.
Apple Watch likely helped with the massive "other" category growth
Strategy Analytics estimates almost half the smartwatches shipped worldwide in the second quarter were from Apple
They believe Apple shipped 5.7 million representing a 46 percent share of the market.
No one else was even close. Samsung was number two and shipped less than half the number of watches as Apple. 2 million.
Apple hires X-Box Co-creator
Xbox co-creator Nat Brown announced on Twitter he’s had joined Apple
Brown had also worked on VR at Valve
Apple has a new focus on AR and games.
3D time of flight sensors on the iPhone in 2020
Brown says he’s fascinated how hard games push hardware and software and hardware platforms
With Apple Arcade just around the corner as well it makes sense.
Apple also moved Kim Vorrath, their lead for program management on the software development team over to the AR and virtual reality team
Kim was know for making sure the development team stayed on track meeting deadlines and also testing software and fixing bugs
Apple Pencil for iPhone in 2019?
Rumors are swirling once again that we might get Apple Pencil support on the iPhone
Ming-Chi Kuo has said in the past there is possibility of Apple adding Apple Pencil support to the iPhone lineup at some point in the future
The same report from Citi Research mentions a 10-megapixel front-facing camera and upgraded 14-megapixel versions of the rear camera sensors
Good news. If Apple gets hit with new tariffs on iPhone components their expected to eat it, not us.
Ming-Chi Kuo he believes “the tariff may not impact the prices of Apple’s hardware products” in the United States.
OK, that last part may not be good news for some of you.
Could sting for Apple's profits and that in turn could impact the stock price.
Or maybe not as Kuo also believes Apple’s non-Chinese production locations could meet “most of the demand from the U.S. markets” within the next two years.
I think Apple is already keenly aware that buyers are a lot more sensitive to iPhone price points
We're also expecting to see an iPad update this fall with Apple updating the entry level 9.7-inch model with a new 10.2-inch version
The physical size is likely to be similar to the current 9.7-inch model
Could also possibly mean FaceID
We'd also expect a processor bump
2021 iPhone with FaceId and on-display fingerprint sensor according to Kuo
Choice and convenience as they each address different scenarios and shortcomings
Apple card arrives (for some)
TechCrunch noted that Apple has finally started rolling out Apple Card to a "very small" group of customers.
Some who filled out the “Notify Me” form on the Apple website have received emails.
Those with emails can open the Wallet app and proceed with the application process.
Sign up is easy and takes minutes
You're presented with your limit and rate offer right on your device.
Cancelling means calling Goldman Sachs
Interest rates are between 12.99% to 23.99%
Apple never sees your transactions (spending behavior is done on device) and Goldman Sachs has agreed to never share your purchase information with third parties, or use it for advertising.
You also can't export the Apple Card data to other financial apps like Mint at launch
Data would only be available on the Phone in the Wallet app (rumor of iPad app)

Feedback, commentary, opinions
Feedback on rumor coverage
Most of you were very kind with nice words about how I handle rumors
Some of you agreed with our caller that the volume of rumors can detract from the "surprise" during Keynotes
May more of you felt like I do that there are still some surprises and it's fun just to see how many things were right and what items were wrong.
I do think that it has added new awareness for me and I'll try to do even better at maybe limiting the scope fo rumors or at least just try to focus on the really fun bits.
Apple stops listening (to Siri recordings).
At least for now. They've suspended the program while they review it
They also say they will add an opt out option to future
This move feels wrong to me because it makes Apple look like they did something wrong and they didn't.
Well, except for not being more deliberate about explaining that records were occasionally reviewed by humans.
Ability to opt out should have always been there.
Hopefully there will be a new question in the Siri set-up process and it's opt in
Would you like to help Apple improve Siri?
Just like they do with the OS crash reports
If you want to make sure Apple doesn't have ANY recording of you
In most cases they don't as only about 1% are retained.
On the Mac
In the Apple menu, select System Preferences
Click Siri
Disable Enable Ask Siri
Back in System Preferences, click Keyboard>
Click the Dictation tab in the upper right
Turn Dictation off
On iOS
Tap the Settings icon
Tap Siri & Search
Turn off Listen for "Hey Siri"
Turn off Press Side Button for Siri
After Apple's warning that you've just turned off Siri, tap Settings
Tap General
Tap Keyboard
Turn Enable Dictation off.
You need to do this for EVERY Mac and device separately as the recordings are tied to an anonymized identifier that is assigned per device and not associated with your iCloud account or Apple ID
If you ever turn any of thee services back on the recordings could get captured and retained
Case of the missing comments
Play question from Laurin
I'm afraid all I was able to do was determine that this is for sure an issue
This must fundamentally be an issue with the PDF engine at the OS level.
What's interesting is it almost seems like the notes are there, but appearing as white on white
I was able to use the comments and notes in PDfpen and those will print though not is the same format as in Preview
I also couldn't get PDFpen to print a note on a highlight.
Do you have a fix / work around for Laurin?
I'm more excited about a 16-in Macbook Pro
I don't "need" a new MacBook Pro, but I already want one.
Trying not to get suckered into another notebook, but Apple is gonna make it hard on me
A larger display in the same for factor
This week we heard it will also likely have the latest 9th gen Intel Coffee Lake Refresh processors
Up to an 8 -core i9 2.4GHz with TurboBoost up to 5.0GHz and Intel UHD Graphics 630
I would also expect the latest or update Radeon Pro GPUs as well.
With a new iPhone too the Fall is looking to be expensive. I'm saving now.
