iPhone 13 may offer larger batteries
*
Coming from serial Apple leaker L0vetodream claims that Apple’s iPhone 13 batteries will be larger than the ones from the iPhone 12 by up to 18 percent.
*
This is despite rumors that the case design should remain unchanged.
*
Ming-Chi Kuo had also previously made comments about larger battery capacities noting that that would also add some weight to this years models.
*
The A14 processors are also expected to be more energy efficient.
*
Even with better processors and larger batteries though, don’t expect to automatically get more significant battery life.
V
Other rumors have noted the possibility of LTPO displays with variable refresh rates enabling the iPhone to possibly get Apple’s 120Hz “Pro-Motion” display.
*
While this too has the ability to be more energy efficient when running lower refresh rates, at higher rates though that usage increases/
*
Also w’ve heard Apple could add the ability for an “always on” lock screen, so that too would likely consume the extra juice.
*
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives thinks Apple will offer a 1TB storage option on the iPhone 13 and will bring Apple’s LiDAR technology to the entire lineup this year.
V
Apple considers wireless charging for iPad Pro
*
According to a report by Bloomberg
*
This would supposedly happen with the 2022 models if it happens at all
V
Would require a glass backed iPad
*
Seems like a somewhat scary proposition to me
V
Also not sure I seem the advantage beyond possibly removing the port?
*
Don’t think you’d do that now that you have USB 4 / Thunderbolt
*
You have the Smart Connector that already in a way could accomplish that?
*
Would need some form of MagSafe to handle alignment, plus charging is slower
*
Piece does note that the feature would also offer “reverse” charging which could be handy for AirPods, iPhones, and Apple Watch
*
Finally the story also claims Apple is still trying to develop some sort of wireless charger a la the failed AirPower charger along with long range wireless charging option.
V
iPad mini may also be getting it’s first major redesign in six years according to Bloomberg
V
The new design is said to have reduced bezels and flat square edges
*
Basically a scaled down current gen iPad Air
*
Apple may also be considering removing the home button (I assume for the TouchID power button)
*
The design changes make sense for previous rumors that claimed Apple was considering bumping the screen size from 7.9 inches to 8.5 or 9 inches
*
According top Jon Prosser it has a USB-C port and could have a smaller Apple Pencil accessory
*
The same story from Bloomberg says Apple is working on a thinner “entry-level” iPad
*
Both are expected to be available as soon as by the end of the year.
V
Updated MacBook Pros still coming
V
Didn’t happen at WWDC, but that hasn’t stopped the rumors
*
A report noted that Apple’s WWDC YouTube videos are using the tags ‘m1x’ and ‘ M1X MacBook Pro’, but that’s likely just smart marketing
V
DigiTimes claims an update of MacBook Pros with miniLED displays is still on for the second half of this year.
*
Reportedly the delays have come because of shortages of miniLED components
*
The news comes as they claim Apple has lined up another new supplier, Osram Opto Semiconductors, for production of miniLED for backlighting
*
The new machines are expected to debut Apple’s next generation of Apple silicon with more cores, 10 (eight high performance and two high-efficiency), 16-core and 32-core GPU, and up to 64GB of RAM
*
The case design is said to have more squared edges taking design queues from the latest iPads and iPhones and will bring back more ports like HDMI, SD card slots and MagSafe
V

V
Apple’s AR headset comes next year
*
In the second quarter according to Ming-Chi Kuo
*
Says it “will provide a video see-through AR experience”
*
Some reports have claimed it would offer both AR and VR experiences
*
Kuo mentioned in the past that the headset could have as many and 15 cameras
*
It’s expected to use eye tracking to enhance the user experience
*
The device is predicted to probably launch with a high price point. At least USD $1000, but it could be higher.
V
Apple hires former BMW electric car exec
*
Bloomberg reports that Apple has recently hired a former senior VP from BMW, Ulrich Kranz, who worked on the development of BMW’s i3 and i8 electric and hybrid cars.
*
Kranz was at BMW for 30 years but had left and spent 3 months at Faraday Future before cofounding the self-driving electric car startup Canoo
*
Kranz will now be brining his skills and expertise to Apple to work with Doug Field and his team on Apple’s car development
*
Apple’s car project is still in the early stages of development and most analysts don’t expect Apple to announce any result from the project for at least three or maybe five year or more.

Business Movers: The Enlightenment of Steve Jobs
*
From the iPhone to Pixar, Steve Jobs led a career full of groundbreaking innovation. But his road to Silicon Valley success was a rocky one, filled with failure and burned bridges. From Wondery, on the new season of Business Movers, learn how Jobs took Apple from near disaster to total triumph.
*
Steve Jobs liked to say a computer is “a bicycle for our minds.” He saw how bikes elevated our minds and bodies, and he thought computers could do the same for the brain.
*
Jobs had a knack for seeing the big picture – that a computer- animated film like Toy Story could be the future of movies. Or that a phone in our pockets could give us a universe of information at our fingertips.
*
From the makers of the hit series Business Wars comes the new season of Business Movers – a weekly podcast that explores the legendary and controversial career of Steve Jobs.
*
One thing I really like about the Business Movers podcastr is their use of storytelling mixed with dramatizations it makes it really fun to listen to.
V
I also really enjoy the fact that these Steve Jobs episodes are delving into his full career inside and outside of Apple. So often the focus is just on Apple.
*
We get to learn more about Steve’s relationships with other key figures who helped his career and vision along the way.

Last time I broght up some of my concerns about the “siloing” of podcasts
*
Play feedback from Matt
*
That’s not to say I’m against subscriptions or don’t think there is a place for paywalls for content. I just don’t think it’s the place for shows like mine that are designed to be a community experience.
*
I’m also not sure that if your show is exclusive to a platform or ALL the content is behind a paywall it still gets to be called a “podcast”?

Spatial Audio in Apple Music
*
Apple rolled out Apple Music Lossless and the Spatial Audio for Apple Music subscribers
*
I immediately wanted to try it out.
V
For Lossless you need to go into Settings > Music and set how you want to get audio
*
Can have different options for wi-fi vs. cellular
*
I have to say Spatial Audio is nice and enhances the experience for me.
*
Not sure it’s a “earth shattering” as Apple’s marketing team wants you to believe it is.
*
I was more blown away by Spatial Audio (Dolby Atmos) in AirPods Pro for movies on the iPad
V
Saving “man” pages
*
Every once in a while I get a more technical question and these can just be fun.
V
This one is from John:
*
“I want to when performing man on a certain command I would like the output going to my desktop in human readable .txt file, is this even possible? I know grep is involved as well with |.”
V
Many of you may be going, “What’s a “man” page? Let me explain
*
If you open the Terminal on your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) you get a UNIX command line prompt
*
From here there are all kinds of command you could type to perform various action on your computer. For example `ls` to list out the contents of your current directory or `cd` to change directories, if you pass a path as an argument.
*
But how do you know what the commands do and what options or parameters they take?
*
That’s where Manpages (Manual Pages) come in. Type `man` plus the name of the command you want to know about and it will return instrutions for how to use that command, what it does, etc.
*
You can push the output of the man command into a text file. In fact with UNIX you can do that for any command that return text to standard output
*
The “>” character is the redirection symbol and you “redirect” the output to a file.
*
Double “>>” will append to a file.
V
In the case of man page output there are backspaces and tabs that can throw off the ASCII text so you’ll probably want to clean that up.
*
Luckily there is a command, `col` and a couple of flags `-b` an `-x` that will remove backspaces and convert tabs to spaces.
*
You and use the “|” (pipe) character to “pipe” the output of one commend to another command.
V
So in the end the command you wind up with is something like:
*
`man cp | col -bx > ~/Desktop/man_cp.txt`
*
