Kolide
*
Kolide sends employees important, timely, and relevant security recommendations for their Linux, Mac, and Windows devices, right inside Slack.
*
Kolide is perfect for organizations that care deeply about compliance and security but don’t want to get there by locking down devices to the point where they become unusable.
*
Instead of frustrating your employees, Kolide educates them about security and device management while directing them to fix important problems.
*
Kolide knows end-users are IT admins' most significant untapped resource and the key to solving the most challenging to fix security issues, including:

• Finding plain-text two-factor backup codes and teaching end-users how to store them securely
• Convincing employees to uninstall evil browser extensions that may sell their browser history
*
Those are just some of the many use-cases not solved by locking down devices.
*
You can try Kolide with all its features on an unlimited number of devices for free for 14 days; no credit card required.

M2 and new MacBooks
V
New M2 has the same number of CPU cores, 8, but with a larger cache and so Apple says it’s up to 18 percent faster
*
It also is larger with 20 billion transistors, a 25 percent increase from M1
*
Anandtech says the key difference in performance is more powerful efficiency cores
*
Has two more GPU cores, 10, for up to 35 percent better graphics performance
*
Supports up to 24GB of unified memory and memory bandwidth increased up 50% to 100GB/s
*
It has a Neural Engine that runs 40 percent faster
*
The video encoders have also been updated with a new high bandwidth video decoder supporting 8K encoding and decoding. Apple says the M2 will support multiple 4K and 8K streams at once
*
An improved image signal processor (ISP) which should improve webcam quality
*
Still built using the same 5nm process as the M1
*
Still 18 hours of battery for video playback
*
Can still only drive two displays. On a MacBook that means the internal display and one external display with up to a 6K resolution
V
New MacBook Air

Just 11.3 mm thick and 2.7 pounds

*
Hands on reviews note that “midnight” matches the “midnight” of the Apple Watch which has a slight blue cast. Also seems to attract fingerprints
V
Supports fast charging with an optional 67W charging brick.
*
There is also a 35W dual USB-C port charger that comes in a “compact” and “standard” form factor
*
The “compact” version is what’s included with the higher end MacBook Air configuration
V
Priced starting at USD $1,199.00 which is $200 more then the M1 MacBook Air
*
The M1 MacBook Air is still being sold at USD $999
*
Available next month

The 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro also got an M2 upgrade, but that’s it
*
Still starts at USD $1299.00. Though can get memory up to 24GB
*
Everything else remains the same, including the TouchBar
*
Seems like a really bad deal vs the new MacBook Air if you spec them the same
*
Air has, larger screen, MagSafe, full height function keys, better webcam. Only possible advantage on the MacBook Pro is active cooling and slightly more battery life.

V
Apple’s AR / VR headset
*
One thing some thought we would see, but didn’t
*
A report in the New York Times claims that’s because Apple has had performance and thermal issues that have lead to delays
*
You might remember that Apple reportedly hired an engineer from Dolby Technologies Mike Rockwell to lead the project but he supposedly walked into a mess with an underpowered processor and battery life issues.
V
We know that Apple is pushing for a headset design that is and lightweight and comfortable as possible
*
Described recently in some reports as looking like a pair of ski goggles
*
There’s belief that the project is getting close to completion and we discussed reports that Apple has allegedly given demos of the project to their board of directors
V
Reports that Apple might be looking to some of the Hollywood talent they’ve been working with on Apple TV+ projects to drive new and innovative content for their headset
*
One name thrown out in rumors is Jon Favreau who executive produced on the Apple TV+ series Prehistoric Planet
*
A report claimed he’s “working to bring that show’s dinosaurs to life on the headset”
*
The same NYT reports said that Apple is also working on software tools that would allow developers to work with the camera and voice systems in the headset to allow for hands free navigational experiences.
V
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple was possibly hoping to have the headset ready for a public release in the first quarter of 2023, but now feels that has likely been delayed until at least Q2 of 2023
*
He believes we could see Apple entering into engineering validation testing in the next three months and, depending on the results, making an announcement with developer units being available in early 2023
V
14-inch M2 iPad Pro Rumored
*
There’s rumors floating around Apple is developing a 14.1-inch mini-LED ProMotion display iPad
*
The first one came from a tweet from the account Majin Bu which has had recent success predicting iPad OS 16 rumors
*
Then reliable display analyst Ross Young also claimed his sources say such an iPad is in development and will likely be announced in early 2023
*
The Majin Bu account also said that there would be M2 versions of a new 11-inch model with no major changes, and a new 12.9 model with reduced bezels.
*
The two rumors differ on the timing with Bu hinting the release could come sooner at a Fall event, which is also what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks the timing will be. Gruman was actually the first to postulate that Apple was planning a larger 14-inch iPad Pro.
V
Bloomberg is also reporting that Apple is planning a 15-inch MacBook Air for 2023 along with a new 12-inch laptop and upgrades to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.
*
They called the 15-inch model a “wider version of the 13.6-inch MacBook Air”
V
They also say, “Apple has also begun work on a new 12-inch laptop and is considering launching it at the end of 2023 or in early 2024.”
*
twitter leaker Majin Bu claims the 12-inch model will be a small version of the Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips
V
The 14 and 16-inch upgrades would be the updated M2 Pro and M2 Max versions are are not expected to have any radical design changes. The processors could use TSMCs updated 3nm manufacturing process though.
*
The chips could include 12 main processing cores and up to 38 graphics cores, up from a maximum of 10 processing cores and 32 graphics cores in the current models
V
Apple TV+ gets ‘Blitz’
*
Apple has picked up a new film called “Blitz” from Academy award winning director Steve McQueen according to Deadline
*
McQueen won the Academy award for best picture for his film “12 Years a Slave” in 2014
*
His project for Apple TV+ will be a war drama focused on "the stories of Londoners during the Blitz of World War II,"
*
The project is currently in pre-production so no word on when we can expect to see it on Apple TV+
V
It also looks like after five months Apple TV+ has landed the rights to a new Formula 1 racing film starring Brad Pitt, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
*
The untitled film is from Joseph Kosinski and writer Ehren Kruger and will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman.
*
The most interesting thing about this deal for Apple seems to be around the theatrical run
*
It will have a minimum theatrical run of at least 30 days or as high as 60 days
*
Apple and split the take from the theatrical run 50 / 50.
V
Apple also announced a new "genre-bending series" called “Sugar” starring Colin Farrell who will also executive produce.
*
The series is from creator and executive producer Mark Protosevich (“The Cell,” “I Am Legend,” “Thor”)
*
And is set to be directed by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles ("City of God," "Constant Gardner," "Two Popes")
*
Deadline is reporting that Apple Original Films and Nike's production label Waffle Iron Entertainment are teaming up to produce sports based Films for Apple TV+

You all know I love the break-in protection that my SimpliSafe home security systems give me... But it’s not always outside forces that you need SimpliSafe’s protection from.
V
This is Terri’s story, a SimpliSafe customer:
*
Terri was away for the weekend for her daughter’s wedding. The morning of the big day, she got a call from SimpliSafe’s 24/7 professional monitoring center. They let her know that her system had detected water in her basement. In moments like this, time is critical because even an inch of flooding can cause more than $25,000 in damages.
*
Thankfully, SimpliSafe had detected the water just moments after the leaking had started. After talking to SimpliSafe, Terri called her neighbor who quickly turned the water in her home off before the flooding got bad.
*
Protecting against floods is just one of the reasons more than 4 million people trust their home protection to SimpliSafe. With a comprehensive SimpliSafe system and 24/7 professional monitoring, you can have someone always looking out for you – just like Terri. Plans cost under $1/day with no long-term contracts or hidden fees. Ever.
V
The expandability and flexibility of SimpliSafe for me is one of the things that make it great.
*
I don’t have a basement, but we do have a pretty large yard, so the ability easily add additional wireless outdoor cameras is perfect for my monitoring needs

iPod Stories
*
So back a couple weeks ago when Apple announced they had discontinued the iPod Touch which basically signaled the end of the iPod era I asked for you to share any iPod stories you had so we could reminisce together
*
Never did I imagine that one of those stories would be about my own iPod
*
In that episode I discussed the fact that I slightly regretted selling my original 5GB iPod (Firewire) for parts on eBay after it broke.
*
Well I also had a second gen iPod that I forgot I had sold to a co-worker Eric
*
Well low an behold I got an email after that episode form Eric who is apparently still a listener and he offered to send it back out of his Apple museum
*
As nice as that is I declined, I’d hate to break up his museum. But how awesome is that?!
*
He also noted that he believed it still works and i don’t doubt it. I have several older iPods, including a 40GB iPod Photo and they all still work great though many could probably use new batteries.
*
So if you have a great old iPod story please share it. It really could be anything, just send it in.

Mic issues with iPhone 8 Plus
*
Mia wrote in to say she was having issues with the mics on an iPhone 8 Plus
*
Basically when on a phone call the people she is talking with claim they can hardly hear her on the other end
*
She tried with a headset and all was fine, so assumed it was a mic issue
*
So she tried other apps that would use the mic, like recording a Vice memo and that was fine. Also making calls via other apps like Messenger were fine as well.
*
The device is running the latest iOS 15.5, so maybe an issue with older devices and the OS update? But I have need seen or heard of any issues
*
She already tried rebooting the phone, removing the sim-card and putting it back in, and resetting the network settings
V
The one suggestion I could find online was making sure or resetting the mic on a phone call to be sure it’s using the iPhone mic
*
Start a call
*
Open Control Center.
*
Tap the AirPlay icon, available in the top-right corner of the Now Playing controls.
*
Select iPhone instead of Speaker
*
My only other thought is maybe noise cancellation (or the mic that controls that) is malfunctioning is some way
*
She checked the mic hole and it seems to be free and clear from any dust or debris
V
She ultimately went to an certified Apple repair shop and they tested the microphones and said that the bottom ones failed their test.
*
Oddly they said they can’t replace the mics and she needed a new phone which is untrue
*
The repair is to replace the lightning cable assembly. A gnarly repair to be sure, but not impossible. [iFixit](https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+8+Plus+Lightning+Connector+Assembly+Replacement/111156) has instructions and the parts and assembly kit with tools is USD $29.99
V
She also went back and tested a FaceTime audio call, which should still use the bottom mics, and that call sounded fine.
*
According to my research Voice memos should also use the bottom mics
*
Were FaceTime video, Siri, and other apps tend to use the front mic
*
I would personally contact Apple support and see what they’d want to do a mail in repair.
*
Still… I am left pondering the mystery as to why only Phone app calls seem to be impacted. So I as the community. Has anyone else had issues like this. Is there a non-hardware repair solution?
V
Apple TV in hotel
*
I’m afraid you’re just too damn loud
*
Either a clever movie reference or what listener Charles said after plugging in his Apple TV into several Marriott hotel sets on a recent road trip to pick up his kid from college
V
What’s cool about this is Charles got to set out the new Apple TV update that allows you to connect your Apple Tv to a “captured” wi-fi network like a hotel
*
He says it works well
*
Connect to the TV via HDMI
*
Go to the Wi-Fi settings in the Apple TV and choose the hotel wi-fi
*
It will detect the captured network and prompt you to finish the set-up on your iOS device
*
That all worked fine, but the issue Charles had after connecting was that anything he played was played at full volume over the set and neither the Apple Remote nor the TV remote worked to control the volume
V
So he did some investigating and discover that the hotel TVs that had this issue, not all on his trip did, had a black box between the electrical outlet, cable IN and HDMI inputs and outputs prior to going into the TV
*
And it seems to be that prevented him from controlling the volume of the TV with either the Apple TV remote or the hotel TV remote.
*
The key to “fixing” the issue was that the box had a telephone line style cable plugged into a port labeled MTI/MPI TV Control. Unplugging that allowed the Apple TV remote or the hotel TV remote to control the volume.
*
Before checkout he just had to reconnect that MTI/MPI and restore the hotels setup back to “normal”
*
I’d be curious to know what the MTI/MPI TV Control is and why hotels use it. If you happen to know send us a comment.

Ads in Apple Music
V
The Apple Music service is supposed to be ad free at all tiers, yet [Jim Dalrymple](https://twitter.com/jdalrymple/status/1531652289215307777) noted on Twitter that he has begun hearing 40 second ad spots for Apple Music One radio shows sprinkled in Apple Music playlists
*
These are the Apple auto generated / curated playlists. Not in Apple Music One shows or on Radio shows.
*
Ads are also not showing up, at least not yet, in personal playlists
*
I have not heard one yet, but Jason Snell noted that he’s also heard interviews sprinkled into playlists and I have experienced this.
*
Have you experienced any of this?
V
I know that Apple has an ad program and we get ads in other paid services like Apple News
*
But I see this similar to a magazine or newspaper subscription. You pay, but there are still ads
*
Also ads in free apps or the App Store are OK in my opinion
*
But this is a music service and specifically advertised on Apple’s own site as “ad-free”. Any ad is an ad. Apple doesn’t get to make exceptions for it’s own content and they try and clime they’re just helping us with recommendations or “discovery”
*
This is wrong.
*
It does seem like these ads may have started appearing around the time Apple release they new lower cost Apple Music Voice service, but even that tier is supposedly ad-free
*
It could be, and hopefully is, a glitch and these ads are only supposed to be inside Apple Music One shows and programs though it feels more intentional, which kind sucks.
*
Regardless I would encourage us as a community to send [feedback](https://apple.com/feedback) to Apple and tell them this is not OK and needs to be corrected.

Thing of the Moment: 2022 Carlinkit Wireless CarPlay Adapter
*
A huge thanks to listener Tony for suggesting this one
*
I mentioned recently that I finally have a new vehicle that supports CarPlay, but was a little bummed because it’s just “wired” CarPlay and not wireless
*
It’s a USD $125.00 USB adapter that you connect to the USB in your car and then connect via Bluetooth to your iPhone and it allows you to use wireless carplay.
*
This device is just a random Chinese adapter and I’m highly skeptical, but it had a great review from Business Insider and 9to5 Mac both who I trust, and plus Tony (who’s been a listener for years)
*
So I figured I’d give it a shot. Guess what, it works great.
V
The setup was easy…
*
Plug into the Car
*
The display will show the bluetooth name of the adaptor
*
Connect your iPhone Bluetooth to the adapter and “boom” wireless CarPlay is enabled.
*
Now when I get into my car the iPhone connects wirelessly and the CarPlay interface appears
*
There is a slight delay while everything connects, but once connected it works great.
*
Occasionally I’ve had it not connect, but I would say the majority of the time it’s flawless.
